A new initiative from the NZGS has been its support for a range of smaller, more focused events outside the biennial New Zealand Geography Conference.

In 2010 Lex Chambers and the Waikato Branch of the NZGS led off this initiative with a successful Geography Education conference in Hamilton.

In April 2011 Professor John Overton and the Wellington Branch are hosting a Development Geography symposium in Wellington. Information about the symposium can be found here.

In late 2011 Dr Matthew Henry and the Manawatu Branch will be organising an extended seminar series entitled Dialogues on Water. Details about timing for this event are to follow.
