Meet the Executive of New Zealand Geographical Society - 2012
President - Professor John Overton

Past-President - Professor Tony Binns,
Tony brings to NZGS his earlier experience as President of the large teacher oriented Geographical Association, UK, and active involvement in the New Zealand geography and development studies communities. He is especially interested in institution building in the education and community spheres in developed and developing countries. He is also currently President of the commonwealth Geographical Bureau (2009-12).

Maria's main research area involves transnationalism and the social strategies of migrants and people living mobile livelihoods, such as seafarers.She is particularly interested in how family connections can be sustained and how people's integration in communities is affected. Recently she has focused on the social well being of people in the Pacific, and policies surrounding social welfare.
Treasurer - Dr David Hayward,
School of Environment, University of Auckland
David is Associate Director (Academic) in the School of Environment, University of Auckland and has an overview of undergraduate pathways in the New Zealand university system. He is currently leading a module on the global economy in the Association of American Geographers funded Centre for Global Geographical Education.
Managing Editor - Associate Professor Etienne Nel,
Department of Geography, Otago University
As Managing Editor, Etienne oversees a team of four editors supporting the New Zealand Geographer, the Society's journal with Wiley-Blackwell. In addition to his role with the New Zealand Geographer he is an Editorial Board member of the Journals: Applied Geography, Local Economy and the Journal of Geography in Higher Education. He currently chairs the International Geographic Union’s Commission on Marginalization, Globalization and Local and Regional Response (C 04-27).

Matt is Programme Coordinator of the Geography Programme at Massey University and Manuwatu Branch Secretary. His research interests include tracing the emergence of scientific communities and networks in New Zealand and the geopolitics of borders.
University Academic Geography Teachers Liaison - Associate Professor Lex Chalmers,
Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning, Waikato University
Lex's research interests are geographical education, rural change, remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems. He is Chair of the influential International Geographical Union Commission on "Geographical Education" and has a long association with the New Zeland Board of Geography Teachers. Lex iwas Chair of the Organising Committee for the NZGS Conference on Repositioning Geography, at the University of Waikato, 21 - 23 January, 2010.
