Why Become a Member?
Membership of the Society entitles members to three issues of New Zealand Geographer published in April, August and December by Wiley-Blackwell. This includes a GeoEd section specifically aimed at classroom teachers. Journals published post 2004 can be accessed on line by current members, and an archive of articles published prior to 2005 is available to members on request. Members receive a twice-yearly Newsletter containing information about developments in Geography, notable achievements of members, activity reports and forthcoming events. Members also become part of their local branch and are eligible for consideration for the Society's President's Awards and Distinguished New Zealand Geographer Medal.
The Society works to promote Geography in schools through a very active New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers. Member schools receive a copy of the "Network", The Board of Geography Teachers' newsletter, each term and schools become eligible for entry to several competitions run by, or in conjunction with, the Society.
The Society holds a biennial Geography conference and periodically combines with the Institute of Australian Geographers for joint conferences. Membership of the Society results in lower fees for members at our conferences. The Society provides disciplinary representation to the Royal Society of New Zealand and affiliation with the International Geographical Union.
Branches of the Society run lecture and seminar series for local members. These feature speakers from New Zealand and abroad. Branches also take turns to host the biennial conferences. Some branches provide grants in aid for student members to attend conferences.
