This competition is run by the New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers in association with generous sponsors NZ Transport Agency. It is open to any Year 13 Geography student whose school is an NZGS member. This year the expectation of the
competition is to encourage and foster excellent pieces of geographic
research involving land use undertaken by Year 13 Geography students.
Prizes for the top work presented include $1,000 for the winning entry,
three runner-up prizes of $200 each, with a separate roading prize of
$500. Schools should, therefore, submit their quality student work for
this prestigious award. The NZBOGT is delighted to be associated with
the N. Z, Transport Agency and reminds teachers than this agency is
able to supply information on a huge variety of planning issues. Ideally the entry should be original research on a contemporary issue illustrating the following:
- the nature of the issue outlining aims
- methodology used in the research
- viewpoints held by the stakeholders
- results of the research
- recommendations
- evaluation of methodology and results
The 2009 first prize is shared between Sonja Hempel and Sam Twyman. The runner-up is Kennie Critchlow. All three students investigated contemporary topics and showed maturity and sensitivity in their judgements. A full report on the 2009 competition can be found in the November 2009 " Network".

IGU International Olympiad 2008
Congratulations to our team who are the second New Zealand participants in the IGU International Olympiad competition. Our representatives were selected from the 2007 final of the Maatangi Whenua competition. The team travelled to the IGU conference in Tunis in August, accompanied by Anna Wilson and Lex Chalmers.
We improved our performance this time and gained three medals:
Hayden Gray from Hutt Valley High School with a silver, Niall Killian from Tauranga Boys’ College and Daniel Tickner from Feilding High School with bronze medals. Fiona Henderson from Riccarton High School was very close to a bronze so this is a little disappointing. To gain a medal students had to be in the top 50% of the competition and the ratio of gold:silver:bronze is 1:2:3.
